James U. Crockett (1915-1979)

Millions of television viewers got acquainted with this 1933 graduate of Haverhill High School when National Public Television picked up the program that started at Boston’s Channel 2, WGBH. It was titled “Crockett’s Victory Garden.”

He began his career in gardening at the Gray & Cole Nursery in Ward Hill and studied horticulture at the Stockbridge, Mass. School of Agriculture and Texas A&M University.

He wrote 18 books and numerous newspaper and magazine articles.

He was awarded the Mass. Horticultural Society’s George Robert White Medal of Honor in 1979.

    His book, Crockett’s Victory Garden is still my go-to gardening bible. He was the inspiration that started my first veggie garden. Thanks for the memories!
